PM Declares GERD a Sovereign Project

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed reaffirmed Ethiopia’s sovereign right to utilize the Nile for national development, telling parliament that no external power can dictate its use of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). He urged Egypt and Sudan to pursue cooperation instead of pressure, saying mutual benefit is the path to lasting peace. Abiy insisted the dam serves energy generation, not control of water, framing it as a political symbol of independence.
